Kitch-iti-Kipi: Michigan’s BIG Spring

Visited:  10/2/2022     State Park in Schoolcraft County. The spring is about 200 feet across and 40 feet deep, and it is distinguished by its dazzling, emerald green, which gives it an almost otherworldly appearance.

Approximately 10,000 gallons of water per minute surge up from small fractures in the limestone along the bottom of the spring, which is located deep in the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula. The water in the spring is a consistent temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit all year, thanks to an underground aquifer that connects it to adjacent Indian Lake.

The hand-operated observation raft with a viewing window that gives passengers a perfect view of the fast-flowing spring and aquatic life below is the nicest part of a visit to the bubbling springs. As you traverse the crystal-clear water, look out the viewing glass or over the side for fish and age-old tree trunks and limbs.
